Journalists who are asking questions: Carla Marinucci, San Francisco Chronicle; Scott Shafer, KQED’s “The California Report” and Pilar Marrero, La Opinion.
Right from the top, we’re thinking Barbara Boxer looks better than we’ve seen her in a while — good for her.
Though Barbara won the coin toss, she decided to have Carly go first, and Carly came out swinging. She doesn’t realize that her hypocrisy was showing from like the 3rd sentence, when she decided it was important to tell us that her husband started out “driving a truck for the City of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.” Really, Carly — your husband was a government employee? That’s where he got his start? And now you think government and yes, government employees, are a huge part of what’s dragging this country down.
7:05p Barbara’s turn, and she goes right to the heart of the matter. As part of her “Made in America” message – Boxer smacks Carly with a great line: 30,000 jobs shipped overseas… 30,000 is the entire population of Foster City, CA.
7:06p Marinucci wants to talk economy and tax cuts — quotes Carly that tax cuts “pay for themselves.” How do you justify immediate help for the wealthiest Americans but not for average Californians who might be out of a job and listening to this debate tonight? Carly says most of the Bush tax cuts went to middle class Americans (well, we guess if you are a multi-multi-millionaire like Carly, you might think so. But the rest of us? Not so much…) and she says if we don’t extend them average Californians will pay more taxes. Where does she get her statistics? Let’s make sure we steer clear of that person. They don’t know what they’re talking about.
7:09p Wow. This is kind of moving fast, we think. Scott wants to talk Iraq and Afghanistan. Barbara reminds everyone that she did not vote for the war. She did vote to support the troops. She wants to see more timelines drawn and she’s happy the troops are coming home. She thinks it’s all fine to help Iraq and Afghanistan but “we need to rebuild America.” Carly uses her time for a litany of bills Barbara did NOT support. She tries to make it sound like Joe Biden might not support
Carly has moved on to talk about “TARP, Sr” and “TARP, Jr.” If Carly is such an outsider and running against DC, why is she talkin’ TARP? So inside baseball – we mean, Washington? Wait, no — not baseball, she’s talking football. Political football. That’s what the teacher’s bill was — “political football with taxpayer money.” Carly loves to categorize issues as “political football.”
7:13p Pilar injects a question about the Dream Act. Carly supports it – but she does not support amnesty. Not that anyone asked her that. And now she’s talking about Arizona and guest worker programs. Barbara supports the Dream Act too.
7:15p Carly’s talking about how Barbara supports “elite, extreme environmental groups.” Is Carly talking about groups like the Sierra Club and the League of Conservation Voters. Really? Elite? Extreme?
7:19p Pretty good job, Barbara, telling the story of Carly’s tenure at H-P. She laid off thousands, she took millions of dollars. She made no sacrifice, while crushing families. It’s devastating stuff. Carly’s rebuttal is a stiff criticism of Barbara’s legislative track record.
7:22p A former H-P employee asks via video about her term “right-shoring” and her quote that “there is no job that is America’s God given right any more.” This is the 21st Century, she says. ”Any job can go anywhere, and what worries me deeply is the jobs we lose may never come back. And so we have to fight for every job.”
(Sorry folks, just an aside — when Carly talks this way, we start wondering how she is capable of divorcing herself from her own actions. It’s like she has no connection to her own history. SHE LAID OFF 30,000 PEOPLE! AND SENT THOUSANDS OF JOBS OVERSEAS! AND THOSE JOBS ARE NEVER COMING BACK! Okay…back to the debate…)
She says China and Brazil fights harder for our jobs than we do. See? It’s OUR fault. We just don’t fight hard enough.
7:22p She’s then asked, “you’ve in the past said that school teachers pay should have their pay connected to their performance. When you were at H-P, and the board of directors forced you to resign in part because of the stock price dropping…you got a severance of $21 million. So some people might say gee, shouldn’t CEOs have the same standards as school teachers? She basically says her compensation at H-P was tied to her performance. So failure is apparently worth $21 million. Alrighty then. Wow.
7:23p Boxer delivers an awesome response. ”I think we’re entitled to our opinion but we’re not entitled to our facts. The facts are there was a $21 million severance check, and my understanding was it was taken — after my opponent was fired. The stock went down more than 50%. So if she’s calling for accountability with teachers there ought to be accountability with CEOs.”
7:24p And if ever we needed a United States Senator to fight for American jobs, it’s now. RIGHT ON.
Carla Marinucci asks Barbara about the “call me Senator” remark to the General in a hearing. Barbara says people have the right to criticize her actions.
7:27p Carly agrees that “we’re not entitled to our own facts.” And then she does this really odd thing. Carly says “its actually a shame that Barbara Boxer would use Hewlett-Packard — a treasure of California, one of the great companies in the world, whose employees work very hard and whose shareholders have benefitted greatly from my time as CEO and all the hard work of the employees that I had the privilege to lead — I think it’s a shame that she would use that company as a political football. I understand that she’s going to mischaracterize my record and my severance package but I think it’s a shame that she would use the company in that way.” Was Barbara doing that? Or was it Carly?
Prop 8. Carly supported it. Should federal law be changed to allow same sex couples to have equal rights? She defines marriage as between a man and a woman. And then she thinks “a single judge” shouldn’t overturn the decision of the voters. That’s such a ridiculous thing for a Senate candidate to say. What if the voters decided that left-handed women couldn’t drive cars? Would that be okay? What if they decided that rich people couldn’t run for Senate? Would that be okay?
Barbara responds on the Hewlett-Packard thing from a few minutes ago. She says “she’s running on her record, as the former CEO of Hewlett-Packard. So what she did there counts, and I’m going to keep on telling the truth about it.” Amen to that Barbara. (By the way, we are also going to keep telling the truth about it. Wanna see some? Check out this video…)
[While these folks discuss partisanship, and Barbara's support of Elizabeth Warren to head up the new consumer agency, we are taking a 2-minute break...]
7:33p On stem cell research, Carly takes the bullshit route. ”It’s when embryos are produced for the purposes of destruction…that I have a great deal of difficulty.”
7:35p Carly is asked point blank if she would support overturning Roe v Wade. And she says “if there was an opportunity” but “it’s not an issue that I’m running on.” Seriously? News flash, Carly — YOU don’t get to choose the issues you “run on.” You decide to run, and WE decide what issues are important and which issues we demand to your stands on. WE do that. You know us, right? The voters? Arrogant much?
7:38p Barbara’s asked when should the Democrats stop blaming W for the bad economy. (We think never). Barbara says they are taking responsibility now, and taking action — pointing out that we ended up with $1.3 trillion budget deficit under W. Fiorina says “recovery summer” has become the “summer of despair.” She’s saying that the stimulus failed. No jobs. And why has Barbara voted against a balanced budget amendment? Against a relatively modest slowing of government growth to 1.5 percent. Carly is woefully misinformed about the stimulus.
7:42p Go Pilar M! She asks the money question: is global warming real? Carly doesn’t answer it. She doesn’t think we need to do anything. Does she think it’s gonna go away? And is it real?
7:46p Carly saying Barbara wouldn’t lift a finger to help Central Valley people who needed water. She says Barbara stood in their way. Didn’t seem to be an opportunity for Barbara to respond.
7:48p Carly being asked about her position that people on the no-fly list should be able to buy and carry guns. Carly says it’s because the list isn’t well managed. [Now she's showing that she's earned her wingnut degree.] ”Here’s the truth: We should not be taking constitutional rights away from citizens and at the same time giving constitutional rights to terrorists.” Yes, she just said Barbara Boxer is in favor of that. Barbara remembering when Tom Campbell reacted with an “oh my goodness” in the GOP debate when Carly first said that people on the no-fly list should be able to buy guns. He basically gasped because her position is outrageous. Carly is also for an end to the assault weapons ban.
7:51p Closing statements. Carly going first — and going full old school Republican here. Take our government back. Do they not have anything new to say? Boxer’s statement is strong. Carly chose to stamp “made in India, made in China” on her products. Nice.
7:57p Debate over. We’ll get info on replays, links, transcripts, etc. ASAP.
UPDATE (Thurs, Sept 2, 2:56A PDT): You can watch the full debate on C-SPAN’s website. Click here.
Tonight, Barbara Boxer and Carly Fiorina will face off in the first California U.S. Senate race debate.
Hosted by the San Francisco Chronicle, KTVU Channel 2 News and KQED Public Radio & Public Television, the debate will air live from Saint Mary’s College in Moraga on public radio stations statewide and certain Fox TV stations at 7:00 PM PDT. There will also be a live webcast at KTVU.com – click here for details.
Of course, the entire CarlyExposed.com team will be watching. Closely. So whether or not you are tuned in to your TVs during the debate, we invite you to join us for some live blogging from 7:00-8:00PM PDT CarlyExposed.com. We’ll do some fact checking and hopefully provide some insightful commentary about what Carly has to say, and how she performs in this forum.
Consistent with our mission to shine a bright light on the real records of conservative Republicans, we expect to help expose Carly for who she really is — a failed CEO, a diva with little understanding of the day-to-day struggles of average Californians, a job killer, and an ally of infamous national extremists like Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck and Rick Santorum.
We’ll be watching closely to see if Carly sticks with her favorite trick — attacking Sen. Boxer’s record (or criticizing her hair!) in an effort to deflect attention from Carly’s own record of failure. If she does, as the debate goes on, remember these important facts:
Carly was a failure as CEO of Hewlett-Packard. She was fired from that job, after she destroyed a corporate culture which once prided itself good relationships between management and employees, killed 30,000 jobs, shipped thousands of American jobs overseas, and drove down the company’s stock price. For more info about Carly’s tenure at H-P, and the thousands of jobs she shipped overseas, watch our video “Carly the Job Killer.”
Carly is being helped in her campaign by some of the most extreme and shadowy elements of the political right. Karl Rove’s new conservative group, “American Crossroads GPS,” dumped $1 million on a TV ad attacking Boxer in the Los Angeles area. The U.S. Chamber, The Club for Growth and lots of Carly’s other corporate pals are planning ad campaigns attacking Boxer as well. The anti-gay National Organization for Marriage, via the Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles, is running a $1 million program to boost Fiorina among Latino voters. And, as we’ve mentioned, her BFF is Sarah Palin.
The real Carly Fiorina is a right-wing extremist. During her primary campaign, she mocked Barbara Boxer’s leadership on climate change as being “worried about the weather.” She’s a darling of the Tea Party movement, the same people who put up the billboard in Iowa comparing President Obama to Adolph Hitler and Joseph Stalin. And, she recently said, “I agree with them.” Last month she was hob-nobbing at an L.A. fundraiser with Andrew Breitbart, the same wingnut who decided to edit down the speech Agriculture Department employee Shirley Sherrod was giving to an NAACP chapter to make it look like Sherrod was a racist.
Armed with the facts, we will all be much better judges of tonight’s proceedings. Then, together, we can shine the light of truth on Carly Fiorina. In addition to joining us tonight at 7pm on CarlyExposed.com for our live blog, you can also help us — and Barbara Boxer — to spread the word about Carly Fiorina in these 4 ways:
1. Make a commitment to help the Lantern Project’s CarlyExposed.com team to expose the record of Carly Fiorina. Exposing her record and agenda is our sole mission, but we need your help to get the job done.
2. Consider supporting our efforts exposing Carly Fiorina by donating $50, $25, $10 or whatever you can afford right now. The funds raised by The Lantern Project today will go directly to the work we do tracking Carly Fiorina and will help us offset the cost of producing original video content for distribution in the weeks to come. And your contribution can help us put the truth about Carly on the air through a set of smart, concise television ads in California before Election Day.
3. If you haven’t already done so, watch our video called “Carly the Job Killer.” This hard-charging 2-minute video tells the story of the Carly’s tenure as Hewlett Packard’s CEO, when she laid off 30,000 Americans and shipped their jobs overseas. The story isn’t new, but the way we tell it is.
4. Spread the word. Tell your friends about CarlyExposed.com. Forward the video to everyone on your contacts list. Join our Facebook page, and ask your friends, family and colleagues to do the same.
The debate tonight is essentially the official kick-off of the Fall election season, and this election is going to be very close. All of the most recent polling shows Boxer and Fiorina in a dead heat. Political and news organizations across the country are rating this California race as a “toss up.” But working together, we can keep the bright lights on Carly, her record and her agenda, and help ensure Barbara Boxer holds on to this vital U.S. Senate seat.
Nearly 40 years later, the Nixon tapes are gifts that keep on giving.
In a post by the talented Dan Morain in the Sacramento Bee yesterday… we were reminded of the unfortunately under-reported but very telling and interesting history of Carly Fiorina’s deep and “classy” Republican roots.
Turn’s out Carly’s Big Daddy Sneed was a Nixon fave — and would have appointed him to serve on the Supreme Court if Nixon has served a full second term.
In this tape, dated Nov. 11, 1972, Nixon is meeting at Camp David with Chief of Staff H.R. “Bob” Haldeman and Chief Domestic Policy Adviser John D. Ehrlichman, and asks whether Sneed might accept an appoinment as the head of the Internal Revenue Service:
“How about the Dean of the Duke [University] Law School? Would he take it? Having in mind the fact that he … having in mind the fact that he would go up to the Court maybe?”
Morain goes on to report:
… Ehrlichman passed along a gift from Sneed to Nixon, a photo of Nixon during his days at the Duke law school.
As this tape reveals, Ehrlichman and Nixon proceeded to discuss their plans for Sneed. Ehrlichman described him as “very bright, very obviously quite conservative, a good Republican.”
In another tape, Ehrlichman tells Nixon, “[Sneed] is a very classy Republican.” Here’s what follows — from the transcript:
As CarlyExposed, and many other news and blog sources, have reported, Karl Rove and his American Crossroads contingent crossed the California border this week with their crusade to derail Democrats in key battleground states.
Their latest target? California U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer.
But just how did Karl and friends amass their millions (or should we say, billions)? Primarily from four southern billionaires long-associated with conservative politics. Justin Elliot reports for Salon.com:
Virtually all of the $4.7 million raised by Karl Rove’s new conservative outfit was contributed by just four billionaires, three of whom are based in Dallas, Texas, and two of whom made their fortune in the oil and gas industry.
Close – dangerously close — to raising their goal of $50 million to bash Democrats in states like Ohio, Florida, Nevada and Pennsylvania (oh, and did we mention California?) — they’ve already begun to unleash their millions with a scathing series of TV ads in these states.
And who are the four well-endowed Southern gentlemen, you ask? Here’s Salon’s handy guide (and a little history about) to American Crossroads’ four donors:
Trevor Rees-Jones, president of Dallas-based Chief Oil and Gas, gave a $1 million donation to American Crossroads just as the group was starting in April. That’s small money for Rees-Jones, who, Forbes estimated in 2009, amassed a $1.5 billion fortune investing in gas prospects around America. He has also been a big donor to John McCain and the Texas Republican Party, Politico reported.
Bradley Wayne Hughes, chairman of Public Storage Inc, is American Crossroads’ biggest donor, contributing $1.55 million to date. Hughes founded Public Storage in 1972 and the company has grown into a self-storage behemouth with over 2,000 locations. Worth $3.9 billion, he lives in Lexington, KY, where he actively raises thoroughbred horses at Spendthrift Farm. (Hughes’ son, B. Wayne Hughes Jr., is on the board of former Senator Norm Coleman’s new conservative group, the American Action Network.)
A company called Southwest Louisiana Land LLC donated $1 million to American Crossroads in June. It turns out Southwest, which doesn’t have much of a public footprint, is owned by Dallas billionaire investor Harold Simmons — no stranger to conservative causes. Since the 1980s, he has ponied up for everthing from Oliver North’s defense fund, to Newt Gingrich’s PAC, to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth in 2004, to the American Issues Project, a group that ran ads attempting to tie Obama to Bill Ayers in 2008 (Simmons was the sole funder of the Ayers effort, giving nearly $3 million.) Simmons is worth $4.5 billion.
TRT Holdings, owned by Dallas’ Robert Rowling, gave American Crossroads $1 million. Rowling, whose firm owns Omni Hotels and Gold’s Gym, got started at his father’s successful company, Tana Oil & Gas. He’s now worth $4.4 billion. In 2004 Rowling gave $1 million to Progress for America, an outside group backing President Bush’s reelection.
Does that cause you (oil and) gas? We, too. Cuz three of these four have direct ties to the (oil and) gas industry, as evidenced in the expose above. No wonder they give to Karl ‘s crusade — and dig deep and “drill baby drill” for Carly Fiorina.
Carly has called for new oil and gas exploration off the California coast while opposing any oil extraction fee, also known as a non-renewable resource tax. California is the only oil producing state in the union that does not tax the exhaustion of its oil reserves.
We got some (oil and) gas out here. Karl and his boys wanna get some. And their girl Carly can help.
We knew he was coming and today — well, he arrived.
Karl Rove’s independent expenditure group Crossroads GPS today launched a new “issue ad” attacking Barbara Boxer for votes on Medicare that were part of President Obama’s health-care overhaul.
C-GPS is running the ad on Los Angeles broadcast television, and they’ve invested $1 million to buy their FIRST WEEK of TV airtime.
Crossroads GPS, a Republican nonprofit group that does not have to publicly disclose its donors, has just announced it has pumped more than $2 million into another round of TV ads targeting Democrats.
That brings to roughly $5 million the amount Crossroads GPS and an affiliated organization, American Crossroads, have announced spending in the last week alone to influence November’s midterm elections.
This round of spending goes after Sen. Barbara Boxer of California; Rep. Joe Sestak, running for the Senate in Pennsylvania and Jack Conway, the party’s Senate nominee in Kentucky.
The ads sound a similar theme: tying Democrats to President Obama’s health care legislation and what the group calls its “intrusive federal mandates.”
Crossroads GPS is spending $1 million for a week-long buy in California; $500,000 in Pennsylvania; and $520,000 in Kentucky.
As always, we ask that you help us fight back. Spread the truth about Carly Fiorina. Forward this post to your friends. Post it on Facebook. Let’s make sure everyone knows what the extremists are up to in California this year.
Our new video, “Carly the Job Killer,” tells the story of Carly Fiorina’s days as CEO of Hewlett-Packard corporation — and the 30,000 jobs she shipped overseas during her reign at H-P.
We hope the video illuminates, in an entertaining way, a very serious issue: Carly is not wholly truthful about her job creating record. Carly says that she wants to run California like a CEO and that she has a wealth of experience creating jobs, but she neglects to tell us that a huge number of the jobs she “created” were in other countries, not here in the U.S. The truth is, she slashed 30,000 U.S. jobs and shipped them overseas.
We don’t think Carly’s record of killing American jobs and shipping them to workers overseas qualifies her to represent YOU, or the rest of California, in the United States Senate. And we are 100% devoted to debunking Carly Fiorina’s self-portrait.
But in order for us to succeed, we need your help. Please spread the word about ”Carly the Job Killer.” Watch the video, then forward it to your friends, families and colleagues. Post it to your own blog. Share it on Facebook. Consider making a contribution today to help defray the costs of our work.
Together, we can inform Californians about who Carly Fiorina is and where really stands on this most urgent issue.

18 — But, in the end, no amount of exporting of American jobs overseas could keep Carly propped up, and she fell from grace at H-P. She was fired. Called “the worst CEO in America.” And paid a severance of $21 million.
California Republicans have gathered this weekend in San Diego for their party convention and, according to news accounts, most of their candidate speeches have offered “blistering attacks on Democrats” but little about their “solutions to key challenges facing California.”
Carly’s speech was noteworthy mostly because she used her time there to attack Barbara Boxer. San Francisco Chronicle reporters Carla Marinucci and Joe Garofoli described it this way:
In a scathing luncheon speech before 400 activists at the California Republican Party convention, U.S. Senate candidate Carly Fiorina derided her Democratic opponent, incumbent Sen. Barbara Boxer, as everything from a “bitter partisan” to someone who has little to show for her three terms in office.
Fiorina, a first-time office-seeker, barely mentioned her rocky tenure as CEO of Hewlett-Packard, other than to say she knew how to create jobs.
Carly started her attacks on Barbara Boxer in TV ads back before the Republican primary, and it looks like Carly intends to keep attacking Boxer right up to election day on Nov. 2.
We have no doubt Carly’s strategy is to keep tearing down Boxer because she can’t build herself up. And she hopes the voters will therefore ignore her own record as a job killer.
Sorry, Carly, but it’s our mission to shine a light on your true record, so we can’t ignore the 30,000 you chopped, or the way you shipped jobs overseas.
In fact, we’re here working 24/7 to help make sure this strategy of Carly’s does not succeed. Help us by spreading the word about Carly the Job Killer.
In an interview yesterday at The Desert Sun, Carly Fiorina said “we need to hold people accountable.”
We couldn’t agree more, Carly. We’d like to examine your statement that “when we destroy a job, we do much more than destroy a chance to earn a paycheck. We destroy a dream for someone and their family.” So let’s go to the video, shall we?
Just curious, Carly, do you even remember that it is YOU, not “we,” and certainly not Barbara Boxer, who destroyed 30,000 jobs — and therefore 30,000 dreams, when YOU were CEO of Hewlett-Packard? And it was YOU, not “we,” and not Barbara Boxer, who sent thousands and thousands of jobs overseas, to India, China, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, even Ireland.
Even if you don’t remember it, Carly, we do. And, since a large part of our mission is to shine a light on the hypocrisy and double-speak of conservative candidates such as yourself, we’ll have more to say about this in the coming days.
Fiorina is looking to pull off the upset and knock off Boxer in California. If she actually does it, conservatives may start building “Fiorina Fountains” all over the state in tribute to her political conquest!
What are “Fiorina Fountains,” anyway?
Carly also chats with Brody about some of her fave Republican Tea Party topics of the day… and talks about:
Sarah Palin’s endorsement -
“Well sure. She endorsed me. I’m proud of that endorsement.”
Whether considers herself a “Mamma Grizzly” -
“I think one of the things that’s so compelling about Governor Palin is the way she expresses things so the phrase ‘mamma grizzly’ is very colorful but it makes a point.”
Weighs in on the Ground Zero mosque controversy – well, we must admit, Carly really didn’t have anything “colorful” to say on this topic.
Proposition 8 & gay marriage -
“Fortunately the decision by a single judge is the first in what will be a long, multi-step legal process…”
Brody also asks Carly if she’s Barbara Boxer’s “worst nightmare.”
“Look, you’ll have to ask Barbara Boxer that.”
Barbara doesn’t have to answer that. We’re happy to help.
For those of us here at CarlyExposed, Carly is OUR worst nightmare. And that’s why we’re working 24/7 to make sure “Fiorina Fountains” don’t get turned on in California.
Karl Rove is close to raising his goal of $52 million to spend bashing Democrats in the 2010 election cycle. On Tuesday, his two groups, called “American Crossroads” and “American Crossroads GPS,” launched ads in Ohio and Colorado, and he’s known to be hungry for victory in California. Listen to him talking about the CA Senate race:
On top of Karl’s efforts, the National Republican Senatorial Committee has reserved $1.7 million in TV ad time for the Fiorina campaign’s final week and, with funding from the anti-gay National Organization for Marriage, the Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles is running a $1 million program to boost Fiorina among Latino voters. And, last but not least, over the weekend we heard Carly wrote herself another 7-figure check and purchased $5 million of TV time with it.
But we can counter their efforts! Help us expose Carly Fiorina by shining a light on her failed record and extreme agenda. Make a contribution today.
